Hello -
I'm helping friends with their home network and we cannot share printers nor
files and folders. We would like to share printers and files & folders if
possible.

2 new Dell PCs with MS Windows XP Home Edition
Netgear 4-port router
HP Laser Printer
HP Deskjet Printer

Router IP: 192.168.0.1
Dell PC 1: 192.168.0.2
Dell PC 2: 192.168.0.3

We CAN connect online, send and receive e-mail, ping the router and itself
from each machine.
Neither machine can "see" the other - pinging times out.
Workgroup name is the default: MSHOME for both machines.
TCP/IP settings are "...obtain automatically..." for each machine.
Both machines got the "Welcome to the MSHOME Workgroup" message when we
configured them.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and any help will be
appreciated!
John

Double click My Computer. Is there a Hand under the C: drive? If not then
right mouse click the c: and select sharing then check sharing. For the
printer, Start>Settings>Printers and Faxes. Is there a hand under the
printer? If not right mouse click and select shring. Check the Share this
printer. That the short of it. For better troubleshooting visit

These tips should help you get everything working:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
