I assume this is possible but want to be sure: I will
have 5 desktop computers soon on a network. Rather than a
central server, there will be one of the 5 that has a
central database which I would like the other 4 computers
to be able to see, but not allow the other 4 computers to
see anything else on the hard drive of the databse
computer. How do I do this?

To share a specific folder on the hard disk, right click the folder,
click Sharing, and follow the prompts.

In general, the other computers will only be able to see folders that
you've explicitly configured to be shared in that way.

There are some exceptions:

1. If you run XP's Network Setup Wizard, it automatically creates a
"Shared Documents" folder that other computers can see. You can right
click and un-share that folder.

2. If you run XP Professional (not XP Home Edition), it automatically
creates a hidden administrative share for each disk. If you want more
information on that, please reply to this news group message and say
so.

Note: Windows XP Home Edition only allows 5 other computers to access
its shared folders simultaneously. XP Professional allows 10.

Yes, I do want more information on this:

Hi Steve,

Please forgive the intrusion here but I have an Office PC (Desktop DT) and
a NB connected to a router. Wire from DT and wireless card for the NB. The
internet connections work great from both computers.

I have a network setup and a shared folder on both PCs. I can drag a file
from either PC into its own shared folder, I can drag a file into the
other PC's (DT or NB) folder. I can copy the files to the "receiving DT or
NB" just fine. I can delete the file from the NB folder but I CANNOT
delete the file from the DT's folder. I get an error message saying the
file is being used by another program.

Now, I can delete the file from the DT after I place it there ONLY if the
NB does NOT access the file, IF the NB accesses the DT Shared folder file
then I can't delete it. If I go into SafeMode or reboot, then I can delete
the file.

What could be going on with that folder? Any ideas?

Thanks, Fred
