I have a simple peer to peer network with two XP Pro machines. Lets
designate one as work-1 and the other work-2. The problem I have is when I
am on work-2 and look at the Programs folder on work-1 it states I do not
have permissions to view it. I am able to view other folders contents on
the drive. I even shared the programs folder on work-1 with full
permissions and I am still unable to view its contents from work-2. I have
also noticed that I am not able to view the contents of the Windows folder
on work-1 from work-2. The strange thing is I am able to view all the
folders contents of work-2 from work-1. It appears that all of my security
settings on work-1 and work-2 are the same.

Please help me to find the setting I must be missing.

I'm sorry, but that's how Windows XP works when it's installed on an
NTFS disk partition using "Simple File Sharing". It doesn't allow
sharing the Documents and Settings, Program Files, or Windows folders.
I don't know why Microsoft designed it that way.

You can share subfolders within those folders, e.g. you can share
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express" and access that folder from another
computer on the network.

Since you have Windows XP Professional, you can permanently disable
Simple File Sharing, which removes those sharing restrictions:

1. Open My Computer and click Tools | Folder Options | View.
2. Scroll to the end of the advanced settings.
3. Un-check "Use simple file sharing (recommended).

I do not have simple file sharing activated. I think this may be caused by
the installation of MS Net Framework which coincides with this problem. Is
this a possibility, and if so, where and what to look for?
