I have 3 Dell computers setup in a "Workgroup". I have mapped a couple of
drives to a computer used as a server. I have input IP addresses into the
"HOSTS" file so they see eachother faster. (the internet service provider
here needs to assign IP addresses dynamically.) When a machine is rebooted
it will give an error and a logon dialog box pops up to login to the other
machine. I have set a password but it never accepts it. after about 5
minutes. the mapped drives are recognized.

What is going on here? this didn't happen until a few days ago. How do I
fix it?

When the PC is rebooted it first has to get its IP address from your
modem... so it's going to take a few minutes or so to sort itself out.

The way to get around this is to get a router, which then assigns the IP
addresses, the router being either a static IP or dynamic IP from the ISP.

You don't have to map the drives in order to be able to share them. They
will appear in My Network Places all by themselves.

I activated the Network wizard, and incorrectly configured my XP to be the
Host- so now it issues a wrong static IP, instead of getting it from my
router. Any advice to amend XP?
