I have a strange problem at the moment. I'm currently on
a university residential network. The network runs DHCP,
and I have my computer configured exactly as the
residence website says it ought to be. When I first start
up my comp, I can connect to the residence network, as
well as the internet, but after a short while (say 10-15
minutes) all my network services go pretty much dead. If
I try to view a webpage after the network has cut out on
me, I get a message in the status bar of Internet
explorer which says "Searching for proxy", and then gives
me a 404 page not found error. I have thoroughly checked
through every network hardware device and software, and
none of them have proxy enabled at all. If anyone could
give me a clue on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

if you're using a Firewall, Check if ports 67 and 68 are
open. Maybe DHCP-Lease Times are set to 10 to 15 Min.
That means that the first time it gets its DHCP info (at
boot time, when the firewall is not yett running) all is
oke. But after it's lease-time expires it will try to Get
the DHCP-info again but will fail because of the firewall.

Hopefully this will help ;-)

Thanks a lot man, I think you're really on the right
track here. When I run ipconfig from the command prompt,
it tells me when my lease time expires. When I run
ipconfig, the lease time resets, and I'm able to access
the internet again. That means that I can use the net
when I need to, but I'd rather not have my lease expire
in the first place. I don't have the windows xp firewall
on, at least, I've checked every firewall related device
and software on my comp, and all of them tell me I'm not
running it. I think you're right about my dhcp ports
closing down though. Any suggestions on how else to fix
that, or other places to check for a firewall that aren't
so well known? Also, do you know how I can check port 67
and 68 specifically, because I don't remember how to do
that? Thanks a lot for your help so far, and hope you can
help me out of this bind.
Hans
