Peculiar Page Count

I have a 283 page document in many sections with different numbering schemes. The first 5 pages have no numbers. The next seven pages have roman numeral numbers. The thirteenth page has no number and then the next page through the end are numbered with arabic numerals starting with page 1. All the numbers display correctly. However in the toolbar at the bottom of the page, where the third item from the left displays the total pages in the document and where I am within that total, the display says that there are 284 pages rather than the 283 that there actually are! The error appears to be right before the section that begins the numbering with arabic number 1, i.e. page 14 in the document. According to the count, there is no page 14. If I click on page 13, it says 13 as it should, but if I click on the adjacent page, it says page 15, instead of page 14 which it should be! There is no page 14! I viewed the document at 50% of normal size just to see if I was missing a blank page. I'm not. I see two pages side by side. If I click in one, it says page 13. Click in the one immediately adjacent, it says page 14
Can anyone explain this or tell me what to do about it? Do I need to do anything about it? Can it create some other kind of error I am not aware of
Thanks for your help

It almost sounds like one of your sections has a "Different Odd and Even"
setting set. Sort of like keeping the back page blank so your new section
starts on the right hand side of your two-sided document.

Go to the previous section (note the section numbers on the Status Bar
(bottom left)), click "File", "Page setup", click the "Layout" TAB and see
if "Different Odd and Even" is checked under Headers and Footers. If not,
close out, go to the next Section and do the same. More than likely it is
set in the earlier section and just needs unchecking.

If not, holler back.

Hi Michael

Is there a section break at the beginning of page 15? That is, does the
status bar show page 13 in one section and page 15 in another? If so,
perhaps the section that includes page 15 has been set to start on an
odd page. So Word is skipping 14 and going straight to 15. To solve
this, click on page 15, File > Page Setup. On the Layout tab, make sure
that Section Start is not set to "Odd page".

Hope this helps.

And note that you can see this blank page in Print Preview if you have a
two-page spread displayed.

That was exactly it - different odd and even in the one page section before. Thank you, thank you, thank yoy!

Ooops, I think I experienced premature congratulations. I was able to get rid of the mystery page by unchecking different odd and even, but that seemed to remove my different odd and even option that I wanted in the section FOLLOWING page 15. Even though I made sure that none of my section header and footers have "same as previous" checked, it seems to act like it's checked anyway. Whatever I do regarding odd and even in the section following page 15, resets that option for the previous sections and vice versa. If I change odd and even in the sections prior to page 15, that action resets the section after page 15. Section start is set to "new page" by the way.
Any other ideas, please?
Thank you.

"Different odd and even" is all or nothing; you can't set it for specific
sections. But it's not so much the odd and even that's the issue; it's the
section start: if you have an Odd Page or Even Page section start, then you
may get a blank page.

Once again, thanks for all your help. I just wanted to add something I discovered which allowed me to solve all of my formatting and page count problems. I went to the very first page of the document, went to "page setup" and changed the section setting from "new page" to "odd page." That then allowed everything else to fall into place! I thought I would pass that along in case it is useful to someone else
