I have a simple network between two computers both Windows 2000 one a
desktop and one a laptop. When I connect to the shares from either to
either it is asking me for a password and a username, when I enter my logon
name and password I get access. I have never seen this at school or work,
both networked environments. What is causing it to request a password?

Adam

Windows 2000 requires you to authenticate against the local users of the
computer [unless the guest account is enabled - not secure and not
recommended in most cases]. If the logon name/password that you used to log
onto the remote computer was in the local users of the machine offering the
shares, then you would have received share access without a prompt but if it
isn't then you will be prompted for name/password. --- Steve

Also to add, your work/school may have been a domain environment in which
case you logon to the domain which controls how you get access to other
domain members. In a domain environment, after the initial logon you usually
are either given access or denied. The domain contoller is used to
authenticate you for member machines - usually not the local computer users
in the local sam.. --- Steve

With Windows 2000, you must authenticate before access to a resource is allowed. In a workgroup environment, you will be
prompted for authentication unless you enable the Guest account. In a domain environment, you get a token from the domain
that allows the resource to authenticate you behind the scenes.
