pdfs won't download/display

I'm running IE 6 and Acrobat Reader 6 and have just installed SP2. Since
doing this I cannot access .pdf file on the web. In some cases IE opens a
new window (but not acrobat reader) and i can see the file downloading but
when it has finished all i get is a symbol in the top left of the window that
i can't open. The symbol properties point back to the file i downloaded but
can't open.

In other cases when i click on a file that i want to download IE opens a new
window and says "Done" but there is nothing there and no fiile was
opened/downloaded. I have tried changing the Acrobat Reader Option "Display
pdf in browser" but it makes no difference whether it is checked or unchecked.
