Because the files are huge (1.2 MB, 2.4MB and ???MB) and will take time
to load depending on the speed of the connection.

That depends on the type of connections you expect your visitors to use.
If you think some people will be accessing via modem then estimate about
5 minutes of download time per MB and size accordingly. The smaller the
better. I'd probably want to see them no larger than 250-300KB but
that's just my opinion. Since pdfs tend too be larger files someone
interested enough in the content will probably wait for it even if
larger than that. But if the content is already online in html format it
might be best just to link to it or ask permission to reproduce the
content as text on your web page with proper credit and copyright.

IE7 reports invalid character at line 2, character 1, and object
required at line 1, character 1.
I have never successfully opened a .pdf file in IE6 or IE7 when using
Adobe Reader v7 and later.
If I need a .pdf, I always right click on the link, and download the
file for later perusal, not in the browser.

No real problem (small delay between blank PDF screen and the actual PDF content being displayed)
here on a high speed cable connection via XP SP2 and IE6 w/Adobe 7 Reader.
