I would like to be able to browse through a folder of PDFs, have a preview
pop up in a preview window, and then be able to rename the PDF according to
its contents.

Neither Irfanview or Xnview will display the PDF. xplorer2 will show the
coding for the PDF (postscript?) in the quick view window but won't show the
document image.

The beta version of ny $-ware file manager will but I know of no
other-free or otherwise.

Are you sure about that? The linux flavour of XnView certainly
does...

I use it for the same purpose that you describe -- most handy.

Hi DC, thanks for the info ... I checked out the screenshot, and then I
checked my Tools/Options - a check mark is shown next to "Portable Document
Format" and extension "pdf", but for some reason, no preview of the PDF file
in XnView. The preview pane remains blank when a PDF file is highlighted.
I can launch Acrobat to view the file from Xnview, but that's not what I
need.

Just a hunch... I think that XnView needs to read the entire pdf before
it can render the "thumbnail". If you have a bunch of very large pdfs,
this could take quite some time. Try it with a much smaller pdf, alone
in it's own folder, before you rule out XnView completely.

Good luck.

Hi Spoon2001!

PDF Explorer

http://rtt.planetaclix.pt/

will go some of the way.

You can preview a whole batch of PDFs very quickly.
Can't rename at will; but you can run a batch file from within PDF Explorer
that substitutes the title of the document (as given in the document
properties) for the file name. You can choose which ones to change in this
way.

What about OpenOffice, I know its a real case of over kill, also I dont
have it on this computer to check, but I have used it for .Pdf files.

I just tried in Ver. 1.6 (windows), I see in File Types that pdf is
listed, but when opening a pdf file, I get the message "the file type
can not be determined".

Only the Linux version works?

I have version 1.66 of XnView for Windows and it wouldn't open PDF
files until I installed Ghostscript. Then it worked.

Under file types, the help file says:
[pdf] Portable Document Format pdf Ghostscript Required, Available
Below http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/

Hope this helps.

I don't know. I suggest you address this in the XnView forums...

Hi Chris!
It is really very simple....

[1] Click on directory tree (bottom right panel) to select directory (and
sub-directories, if desired). Choosing the root directory (+sub-directory
choice) selects all *.pdf's on a disk.
In the main panel the names of all the files appear in one column, the
titles in the second.
[2] Select the files whose name is to be changed to the title of the
document; just click on the box to the left of the file name.
[3] Go to the bottom left panel. Select 'Batch tools'; select 'Rename
checked files as title field'.
[4] Push 'Run' in bottom left panel.
It's all done.

Where this does not work because the title is uninformative:
[1] Drag all the files you want to change to a new directory or
sub-directory;
[2] Select this sub-directory in bottom right panel; a list comes up in the
main panel.
[3] Click (or double click) on each file in turn; the programme will switch
to a viewer panel with the file displayed in it; click 'save'; alter the
title as desired; save it (under its new name) to its original or another
new sub-directory;
[4] Return to pdf info page and do same for next file.
[5] When finished, delete the sub-directory with the to-be-changed files in
them.

Thanks a lot, Theo. You're very helpful. The first procedure worked.
I've been using this useful program off and on for a while. It appears
to have more possibilities than I suspected, but then there is no
documentation or Help file and I have clearly not invested enough time
in exploring all options. I am under the impression that it is
abandonware though :-(.

Hi Chris!

No, the programme hasn't been abandoned.. New versions come out from time to
time.. There is a forum where you can ask questions, put in requests for new
features, etc. You can use it with Acrobat 6 if you first run your browser
(with blank page is best, I think).
Yes, it's a pain in the arse that there is no help file. The programme seems
to be mainly for making data bases of sets of Acrobat files selected by key
words.
Of limited use, because you can't change the document properties that the
author put in. What we need is something that could insert new key words.
Then you cld load all the *.pdf files you want in one go and read them,
switching between them just as you like. I don't know of any freeware prog
that does that.

I use Optimal Access (http://www.optimalaccess.com/en/default.php) for that.

It is a freeware combined browser and file manager with a preview pane that
views PDF's and just about anything else. Very configurable.
======================================================

To avoid confusion, Adrian meant to say that Optimal Desktop Standard was
available for free ... but, you still have to 'register' within 30-days of
usage.
Optimal Access is the name of the company that has several different
programs,
Optimal Desktop Standard being only one of them. I have not tried the
product for myself yet, but this is the only piece of freeware I could find
there.

The complete URL is:
