When I click on a pdf link, all I get is a blank screen.
What do I need to do so the file will open?

Acrobat Reader 5.05 or higher.

same happens to me except I see the image icon in top left corner of the
(supposed) html page.

I save the PDF (I it looks really worthwhile, and I'm desperate enough to
bother with a PDF), then open it from regular win explorer file folder
listing. (plain old windows)

If it is only .pdf files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q303/4/01.asp

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.pdf

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
(QuickTime by the looks of it and if so, I believe they have a fix)
The key does not normally exist.

Hi, thanks for this response. I only noted similar experience as the OP and
I'd never thought to post myself, because I dislike PDF, so rarely check
them :)

However, directly viewing the occasional PDF could be an improvement for me.

My
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension
key shows only
Name Data
(Default) ""

However, I checked the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\MIME
key. It has subkey application/intertrust-spop. I searched
application/intertrust-spop and Google archives
http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=...rev=/groups?sourceid=navclient&q=+ie+key+spop
suggest spop may also deter downloads.

I backed up (exported) that spop key then deleted it, then closed Regedit.

I then clicked on a PDF on google. I still get the image icon. The icon
properties are the URL.

Should I have "backed out" by closing ie or restarting windows before trying
a PDF link?
(Win Me & ie6, Btw)

I've never downloaded QuickTime

I avoid ActiveX downloads out of standard paranoia.

Probably irrelevant: in Downloaded Program Files folder I have
two "damaged" (they usually are damaged) java runtimes from java.sun.com
{E19F9330-3110-11d4-991C-005004D3B3DB}
{8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93}

two Class active from winupdate
and one Class from ms office.

Frank,

Thank you for your help, everything is working!!
