Hi room,

My PDC crashed, the BDC is still function. After rebuild
the PDC how can I configure the PDC in order to get it
synch with the BDC to get all setting and user account
from the BDC.

Please help, any advice is appriciate!!!

Thanks alot Charles and Herb

Sorry I did not mention the OS flatform. My pdc and bdc
are running win2000 server.
My pdc is crash due to the harddrive failure completely.
Do you know where I can find the procedure how to promote
bdc to pdc and de-promote pdc to bdc.

Thanks

No, the are not. Under Win2000 there is no such thing as a
BDC, all DC's are equal (some are more equal than others <grin>)

Just bring you other DC back online in that case. If it's a server
(new install) and not REALLY your 'old DC' then you just DCPromo
it.

BTW, if it had the special roles when you lost it (and this isn't the
same installation), you need to make sure you have SEIZED (use
NTDSUtil) the special single master ROLES.

DCPromo promotes and demotes to and from DCs. There are no
BDCs in Win2000.

Thanks Herb for the info.

I use dcpromo to configure AD for the the fresh OS
installed. I choose the option "additional domain
controller for an existing domain". However I got an
error after put in username, password, and the existing
domain name xyz.com (using admin account). the error
say: The domain "xyz.com" is not an active directory
domain, or an active directory controller for the domain
could not be contacted".
(As I mention that the main domain controller is crash
but the second domain controller is still running.)

do you know what go wrong with my configuration? please
help and thanks in advance

It's almost always a DNS client-server issue; either....

1) The DNS server you have is NOT dynamic (fix & stop/start netlogon)
2) The existing DC is not a client of the DNS (fix & stop/start
netlogon)
3) The new (to be) DC is not a client of the DNS (fix)

For the existing DC you need it registered properly in the SAME DNS (set of)
server(s) so you fix and then run:

net stop netlogon
net start netlogon

Starting NetLogon re-registers existing DCs IF the DNS is dynamic.

For the new machine, it just needs its client (NIC/IP) properties set to USE
THAT
DNS server (set.)
