PCMCIA CDROM not in My Computer after XP upgrade

I have an Addonics PocketCD98 PCMCIA cd-rom. It worked
fine until I upgraded to Windows XP. Now the computer sees
the drive (in device manager and shows as removable
hardware in the systray), but there's no CD-ROM in My
Computer.
Their techs are morons and simply have said "we don't know
why it doesn't work, it must be something incompatible
with your current configuration". I'm not willing to
accept that.

Yes, I've updated the drivers. I've rolled back the
drivers, I've tried using the MS drivers. To no avail.

Is there a file I can edit or something? I'm sure it's
something simple, I just don't know what it is. I really
need this CDROM to show up as a drive due to some software
that only works if it sees the disc in the CDROM drive
(won't accept over-network install).

any help appreciated! THANKS!

also, I downloaded SP1 which was supposed to have
a "PCMCIA device not working once upgraded to WinXP" fix.
But it did not help. In fac the MS KB page said the new
pcmcia.sys file attributes would show a date of October
2001, but the new pcmcia.sys from SP1 shows August 2001.

What the hell!
