I installed Windows XP.. now, everytime I restart I get a
message about the PCI Simple Communication Controller. I
go to device manager and it can't find it. I think this
is refering to a modem (not sure). I use a cable modem
and it works fine. There is another modem in my machine
that is not being used though. How do I fix this or just
make the message stop....

You'll need to install the driver for the existing modem inside your
computer. Otherwise, everytime you boot, Windows will detect "new" hardware
and ask you to install drivers for it. You may actually have to disable
(remove) the PCI modem in Device Manager to get the new driver for it to
work. Alternatively, you could just disable the device in Device Manager
and it won't bother detecting it again (because it has already been detected
but disabled).

"PCI simple communications controller" is usually the term the OS
applies to an unidentified modem. Have you downloaded and installed
the WinXP-specific modem drivers from the modem manufacturer's web
site?
