I upgraded my PC to Asus K7S8XE mobo with Athlon 2600 xp cpu and a 60GB HD.
I installed Win XP Pro from scratch. The problem I'm getting is everytime I
boot up, XP detects a "PCI simple communications controller" and needs to
install a driver when I select auto install it doesn't find anything and
then looks to connect to the internet to find one. But obviously my PCI
isn't installed correctly so my modem doesn't work !!

If I cancel the install XP works OK. I find something on the 'net that
suggested upgrading my bios to the latest version which I've done, to no
avail.

Any help greatly appreciated.

The PCI simple communication controller is part of the motherboard chipset
drivers. Download the XP version from the motherboard maker's web site.

The "PCI simple communications controller" it is talking about is your
modem. All you need to do is download drivers for it and it should work
again, which of course you'll have to do from another computer. As for
updating your BIOS whoever told you that was very mistaken, and it's
fortunate nothing went wrong to ruin your system. If you know the
manufacturer and model of your modem someone here can probably direct you to
the proper drivers to download. If you don't know you'll probably have to
open your case and take out the modem. Look at the largest chip and write
down the numbers and any other information. Of course if there is a name and
model printed right on the card that would certainly simplify things.

Greetings --

"PCI simple communications controller" is usually the term the OS
applies to an unidentified modem. Have you downloaded and installed
the WinXP-specific modem drivers from the modem manufacturer's web
site?
