Never heard of a free copy of PC-DOS (IBM's version of DOS), because
no free copy exist. If you want the current version (PC DOS 2000) you
can buy it from IBM (USD 67) <http://www-306.ibm.com/software/os/dos/>
or <http://www.ibm.com/software/os/dos/index.html>.
If you are looking for illegal copies (warez), this is not the place
to ask, google for it or ask in a relevant group if you want.

PC DOS is not free
however there is Caldera Open DOS

http://esca.atomki.hu/paradise/dos/opendos-en.html
ftp://esca.atomki.hu/pub/pc/dos/opendos/

Caldera Opendos is an MS-DOS compatible operating system, the descendant of
DR DOS and Novell DOS. It can replace the MS-DOS system, and it's free for
non-commercial usage. The full version (with additional networking
capabilities) should be registered at the Caldera's Web site. The
registration is free, they just want to know about thir users... The
registration of the Lite version is not reuired. Starting from the earlier
version (called Novell DOS 7) there was a built-in task switcher. Now
Caldera extended this feature by providing some kind of multitasking
features.

Hi peeps

Anyone know where I can download a free copy of the old PC-DOS?

TIA

For a freeware, open-source alternative, you could also try here:

http://www.freedos.org/

Every time I go back into the DOS world, though, it's a bit of a nightmare.
All those things I used to have to know, but now am in the process of
forgetting! As much as we gripe, it makes me appreciate WindowsXP.

Not free, illegal, probably hacked. See earlier post about this:

I'll snip when I chose not when you think it is necessary. The OP asked
for a free copy with no other qualifying conditions. That is my response
to him not you.

Sure, you decide, but keep in mind this is a rather high volume group,
where a little effort on the senders hand when composing a message
easily translates into readers able to cope with more of them.
The OP asked for a free copy with no other qualifying conditions.

This is <alt.comp.freeware> - a qualifying condition in it self. Or do
you mean to suggest a new definition of freeware, like "anything goes"
- theft included? Something for you to ponder: If this group should
become known as a freeware/warez group instead of just a freeware
group, how many servers do you think will continue carrying it?
That is my response to him not you.

Your respons was broadcasted on Usenet, to this *group*. If you want
to keep communication private - use appropriate channels.

All the best,

I won't go beyond this in responding to your judgmental tirade. I am as
opposed to hacking and warez as you or anybody. Your self-righteous
indignation to my response is truly offensive. Furthermore, your trying
to tell me what to say or do is unwarranted, unsolicited and insulting.
On the rare occasion that I have posted here it has always been in spirit
in trying to help someone. So what happens? I run into a jerk like
you! Thanks, you have ended my helping others. The only thing worse than
your pomposity and arrogance is your ignorance. Finally, if scrolling too
difficult for you perhaps you try to master some other mindless task.

He said in anger. Please re-read this thread in a day or four and
reconsider if this anger was warranted. I think not.
