Can I use a stick of 512mb DDR PC4000 memory in my
p4s533-mx motherboard? The manual says I can use
2700/2100/1600 DDR memory, but a friend of mine has an
extra PC4000 and I would like to buy it from him. I'm
not interested in overclocking or anything. I already
have a 512mb PC2700 in there. I'm using a 2.5ghz Pentium,
if that matters at all.

In theory, the SPD on the DIMM will be programmed for
PC3200, as the SPD is supposed to conform to the JEDEC specs
and JEDEC only goes up to PC3200 (higher speed PC4000 operation
is obtained by manually setting the timing in the BIOS). A faster
DIMM can also be used at a slower speed, and the SPD contains
data for two operating thresholds. It should work, but is a
terrible waste. You could sell the stick for market price, buy
an ordinary 512MB, and pocket the difference.
