I need a ram recommendation for a system i'm building..
ASUS A7N8X
Athlon 2500+

I dont want to overclock as the system is not for me.

Right now PC3200 pricing is double that of PC2700.... (not if you goto
pricewatch). Circuit City this week, for ex. is offering Kingston
512MB PC2700 ram for $40 after rebates.

As I am not going to overclock why should i pay about double for
pc3200? The only thing that makes me think of pc3200 is if the pc is
upgraded to an Athlon 3200+(when they are < $100). In that case I
would have pc2700 running at 333 and my fsb at 400. What would the
performance penalty be??

I also have in mind that the 3200+ is the last cpu before Athlon64 so
im thinking it may be better to keep the $$ down as a result.

He could in the future stay more current and upgrade cheap by:
Spend some $$ on Athlon64 instead of old 3200+
Use $$ saved in ram today to buy new ram for athlon64 mobo. if needed.
(DDR-II)
Get an athlon64 mobo

Your thoughts are appriciated..

I'd stick with the PC2700 (333) for this application.

Besides, if you run the memory synchronous with the FSB (both at 166/333),
it will be as stable as a rock.

As far as the future goes, you'll probably need a new motherboard when
upgrade time comes anyway, and an XP2500 will be a very fast machine for
quite a while.
