PC works ok with Windows98 but not Windows XP

Hi,

My Hewlett Packard PC has worked fine for the past couple of yrs until about
4 days ago then started to lock up and freeze. This happens immediately after
switching on the PC and i am then forced to reboot. The system does not
respond to CNTRL > ALT > DEL when locking up.
I am left with a PC that works ok for a couple of minutes then i am forced
to reboot.

I have not recently installed any OS updates etc or new hardware.

The PC came with a restore disk which i restored to the factory built image
of XP Home edition. Effectively restoring the PC to it's original state. When
i restored the PC the same lock up problem arose eliminating corrupt files.

I ran a scandisk on the HD which passed the scandisk test

I tried using a different Hard-Drive, memory, power supply, cables etc,
basically everything except the MB & Processor again the PC locks.

I also carried out tests on both the MB & Processor with PC Technical
Software and both PASS stress testing etc..

However, when i loaded an older operating sytem e.g. windows 98 the system
runs absolutely fine.

I then removed the modem and NIC that came with my PC and restored once
again with Windows XP Home and now the locking issue seems to have
dissapeared.

Therefore i believe it to be a dodgy modem or NIC both of which are PCI

Can anyone throw any light on why my modem or NIC would cause my PC to
suddenly lock in Windows XP but not on Windows 98.
Is it an IRQ issue?

Expedient reponce greatly appreciated

Sounds like the default drivers for your modem and NIC cards is not
up-to-date and when you re-install XP, the default drivers cause your system
to freeze.

I would check under Win98 websites for your modem card and NIC card,
download any Windows XP drivers, and install them as soon as you bring
Windows XP up.

I would do this prior to any updates from Microsoft, since you will be using
your network to download updates.

Larry,

The PC doesn't touch Windows update site at all after being reset to factory
retore point. All i basically did was install Windows XP again.

As i said it was a pre-built Hewlett Packard windows XP Home PC but when i
re-install the PC with the ORIGINAL OEM restore CD & Drivers the PC locks.
There should be no compatibilty as the drivers worked fine before and it
should restore as if it were a brand new PC.

However if i install a version of windows98 i had lying round the house rom
my old pc the PC works fine.

I beilieve the modem or NIC may be busted.

What i really need to know is why a bust modem or NIC will lock a Windows XP
PC but not a Windows 98 one?

Thanks for the expedient reply
Could you or any other Microsoft Guru out there throw any light on this
subject?

Try Removing the NIC card before installing Windows XP. After XP is
installed and assuming it boots OK and there are no other issues then power
down and re-install the NIC card. On boot-up let Windows detect the NIC card
and then install the latest drivers available for the card.

Overheating components on one of the two items you removed?
If it worked for 4 years without problems and suddenly
started to lockup this could be a hardware or software
problem. Generally if no software has been installed, and
the drivers for the devices don't become corrupted,
something hardware related is failing. Now, XP stresses
computers much more than 98 could have ever hoped of doing.
It could be a failing memory chip, hard drive, modem or NIC,
etc. which can be really hard to track down.

Put one of the two removed items back in. If the computer
lock up returns, shut down, remove that component and
install the other. If the lockup goes away, guess what, you
have found your problem. If the lockup doesn't return with
the first item, put in the other item and see if it causes a
lockup. Same story, you've found the problem.
