PC won't work after installing Norton I S

I had E trust anti virus installed which I tried to remove using add/remove
programs.

Then installed Norton Internet Security. PC will barely boot up. I get a
desk top and some basic icons but not the full ones, and am unable to open
anything.

E trust appears on boot up so doesn't seem to have been removed. It doesn't
appear in add/remove programs list any more however.

How can I get rid of e trust? Their web site only offers the use of
add/remove etc

run.... then type

msconfig....then go to

startup...

browse that list.. look for anything relating to it, uncheck it, look
through program files, remove folders, look in registry remove any registry
entries relating and then re boot

If you are using WindowsME, then remove Norton.....it won't work on it, yet
Norton will not tell the public that little fact. I checked a Norton box
the other day at Staples and it says it will work with ME......not on your
life!! It will mess you up badly.......

Just so you know......Heather

Specifically, what is the problem Heather? I have been running Norton
Internet Security Professional on WinME for some time now. No problems.

It sounds like uninstall left something in your registry or startup. Use
HijackThis to fix (remove) any leftovers in your registry. Check your
startup folder and remove any links to E trust. Locate the E trust folder
in program files and delete it. Reboot.

I have never used Norton on WinME, but have seen a rather large number of
Norton users come to the MS groups in a sad state of affairs, and the only
advice we can give them is to take it back to the store.....and demand a
refund. It just doesn't agree with WinME. In particular, it is to do with
Live Update.

I will ask specifically (or pick up on the next complaint) and give you more
details.

Sorry.....but as I don't use it, I haven't paid that much attention to
exactly how it screws up WinME. 8-((

Cheers.....Heather

It just goes to show how inconsistent Symantec really is, they screwed up
WinME and left me out.

ROFL!! Yep....you are one of the few. OTOH, I got 3 viruses as a newbie
using Norton.......turns out I had that "1 in a 100" that was defective,
which is how I got into reading these news groups. I somehow managed to
solve it myself, but at that time my computer knowledge was mainly how to
send an email. (G)

Happy New Year......Heather

The nastiest infection I have experienced was on one of my WinXP machines
running Norton AV/PF. I am running a NAT router also. A message popped up
stating that NAV had detected a virus, but was unable to fix it. I
disconnected my DSL line and spent a day trying to remove the infection(s)
without success. Final fix was to restore from backup with Ghost using
overwrite windows.

I hope that newbies are not thinking that Norton will protect them from all
harm, it won't.

I would like to see more retirement centers built for virus writers and the
like. I think San Quentin should be the prototype. Forty square feet should
be adequate for most ex-virus writers.

TA:

Here we are all trying to get away from Norton and you want to replace a
perfectly working AV program with an inferior one under WinME.
Why, for heaven's sake?

Harry.

Hi,

I hope that newbies are not thinking that Norton will protect them from all
harm, it won't.

There's not a single Anti virus program out there that will protect
anyone from all harm. So, Norton is not alone in that...
