PC won't record certain sequences from camera

After 14 hours of successful transfering, editing and dubbing to DVDs, a
particularly precious sequence of 2 clips isn't able to be captured. I tried
doing it manually...even tried different choices from "other settings" but
the capture stops at the beginning of the clip nor can it be recorded mid-way
through the clip...and the following clip records but with fits and starts.
Video plays normally in play-back mode when viewing from camera.
Is there any way around this? Seems like there might be an interruption to
digital tracking.

can you list the make and model of the equipment you are using and how it is
connected to the pc.

Thanks for responding. I have a 2006 Dell Dimension E510 running XP. The
camera is a Sony Digital 8...about 4 years old. As noted everything has been
running smoothly for many hours of tape transfer and only 2 long clips in the
middle of a tape will not dub over and I suspect it's some kind of a tracking
problem (though I can still see a stable image during play-back from the
camera).
Is there a way to force Windows Movie Maker to accept whatever video it can
even if the signal is not fully locking in?

Is it connected by firewire?
Have you used manual capture and pressed record just before the problem area
and then stop after it?

Yes, as noted I've tried manual capture repeatedly...trying several choices
from "other settings." The manual process works for all but these two key
clips. The 2nd clip transfers some data but in fits and starts with video &
sound lurching between normal speed and sporadic speeded-up spurts.

Thanks again for staying with me on this problem.

Was this all recorded on the same cam as is playing it now?
Did you change the settings by any chance from say 12 bit sound to 16 bit or
SP to LP etc?
