i have recently formatted my h/drive and replaced the mobo. now it will
only boot if i attach a 2nd h/drive as a slave to the primary master.
if i try to boot from just my main h/drive, the bios wont detect the
drive and i have to go through the auto detect everytime, whereas with
the 2nd drive attached, it boots like a dream. am i missing the obvious
here!?

How do you end up with xp on h drive,by default xp should be on C:
I would imagine that when installing xp,you had the other drives
connected and powered to the board.Try physically uninstall all but
the master for xp,and a cdrom, you'll find out after xp will be on C:
and no other hds are required for start-up....

Is your drive a western digital? They need to be set as Only vs
master/slave when by themselves.
