Hi ppl,

Looking to buy just Motherboard, CPU, Cooler, Ram.

Currently have a decent Case and Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb gfx
and Hard drives ect...

Any comments, recomendations please.........

Abit AN7 mainboard Socket A, SATA, µGuru
nForce2 Ultra400/MCP2-T, ATX, Firewire £71.68

AMD Athlon XP2800+ 2.083 GHz 333 MHz bus
- Socket A (Barton) processor OEM £88.65
can this cpu be overclocked?

2x 512MB TwinMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM 512MB CL2.5
- Memory184-P (for DDR-PC400MHz) £52.88 each
Is this memory reliable enough and is it worth going dual channel?

GlacialTech CPU-Vifte Socket A/370/FCPGA
Igloo Silent Breeze 462 II XP3000+

I just got a XP2500+ Barton on Friday, recently out I believe....

I set my FSB on my ASUS A7N8X-X to 400mhz and my machine now thinks it is
an XP3200 + !!!! Apparently they are unlocked. Anyone know why ?

Using Dual DDR400.

Very pleased. Bargan !

This reply may be too late, but dual channel DDR is the sh!t! It's worth
it...

Everything looks nice. Sounds like a nice system...

I was going to get the 2500 barton but heard the newer ones are locked
maybe you got old stock or can anyone confirm the newer version is unlocked.

<Change the hsf to a Silent Boost (or a SLK 900 if you can spare the extra
<cash)
Think I will stick with the cooler I have here ... too much to pay :-(

Not buying til friday now anyone else wanna add anything?

Well, if you actually *had* set your FSB to 400MHz, your processor would be running at 4.4GHz.
:)

The Barton cores have been multiplier locked since about week 39 (I think), so the only way to
overclock them is by increasing the FSB up from the stock 166MHz.. You are currently running at
11x200 = 2200MHz, AKA XP3200+. Some people are running up to 220MHz., but that requires some
spendy memory.

Hi,

I am going to be building a PC at the weekend with a Gigabyte GA-7N400
Pro2, a Barton XP2800+ and a Hightech Radeon 9600XT. I had been
thinking of overclocking to XP3200, but if the Bartons are now
multiplier locked I'm not so sure. I am a bit wary of increasing the
FSB speed.

I have DDR400 PC3200 memory, but what impact, if any, will increasing
the FSB have on other components such as the Video card.

Thanks,

Harry

Given that your new board is based on the nForce chipset, no; you can lock the PCI bridge
independent of the FSB. You can then overclock via the FSB, which you can raise up until your
memory or CPU show instability in o/c benchmarks.

Get a Barton 2500 as increasing the FSB to 200 will run it at 2.2GHz
which is what the 3200+ runs at.
