A friend of mine says that her computer turns itself on in the
middle of the night.
Any hints as to the typical causes for this?
Thanks in advance.

It is possible that your friend has configured the alarm option in the BIOS
to wake up the system at a specific time. Go into BIOS to check if the Wake
On Alarm feature is enabled (and set for whatever time it comes on). Even
if this option is disabled, try clearing the CMOS. First record all the
settings to note what might've been customized. Then use the jumper on the
motherboard to clear the CMOS. If you cannot find the header pins for the
CMOS Clear where you use a jumper, try removing the battery for 10 minutes
instead. Then remove the jumper (or replace the battery) and go into CMOS
to reset any customized settings. And check the Wake On Alarm (or whatever
it may be called in your friend's BIOS) is disabled.
Although I have seen televisions and stereos turn on due to a surge, I
haven't seen it happen with a computer - yet. Maybe surge protector might
help.
