Does anyone have any comments about PC Tools Spyware Doctor and/or
Registry Mechanic? I downloaded the free version of AVG 8.0. It's not
finding Antivirus 2008.

A much better alternative is:
SuperAntispyware - Free
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html
and/or Registry Mechanic?

Note the comments from Mark Russinovich and the reference concerning ERUNT.

I downloaded the free version of AVG 8.0.

A much better alternative is:
Avira AntiVir® Personal - FREE Antivirus
http://www.free-av.com/
(The free version won't scan your emails.)
You may wish to consider removing the 'AntiVir Nagscreen'

It's not finding Antivirus 2008.

No surprise here.
Download/execute:
Malwarebytes© Corporation - Anti-Malware

--and/or--
Go to:

Good luck :-)

A squared will get it, I have been cleaning that infection out of at least
two PC's a day, (some variants are harder than others to remove)
go to emisoft
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/

Download and run the unpacker (a-squard Emergency USB Stick) files then
browse to the a2usb directory and run a2free.exe and let it update, then
scan and choose deep scan.
depending on what variant of antivirus 2008 you have it may have also borked
your taskmanager and or display properties also.
let us know how you did and good luck.

Very few products can deal with antivirus2008, including some of the real
big hitters like nod32.

Don't you have Google in your part of the world?

Clark - Thanks for the reply. I don't use Google, but I do use Clusty.
I did get info on the PC Tools, but it seemed to be mostly from people
who sold the programs. I think that the really useful information
comes from people like you - that's why I posted here.
