Now this is gonna sound really wierd....

I have 2 pc's, both P4 1.8ghz's, with Geforce 2 / Gerforce 4 Mx440 graphics,
same RAM (768mb), 40gig / 60 gig HDD, and the same Realtek RTL8139 LAN
cards.
I am also running two instances of Windows 2000 Pro.
I have tried and tried to get them to talk. configuring IP's, setting up
shared resources, etc... But all I get on the command line is :

PC 1 : (with Alcatel ADSL Modem (USB))
Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection :
Media State - Cable Disconnected.
(The broadband connection works fine - I've tried it with and without the
broadband on)

PC 2 : without modem
Ethernet Adapter Local Area Connection :
Media State - Cable Disconnected.

Now before people jump the gun, I have tried both cables that came bundled
with the cards, and even *ahem* borrowed one from work, which I was assured
would work. Nothing. Nada.

Any ideas?

Or anywhere that explains how to do 2 win2k pc's in plain english so I don't
get lost?

Cheers

Richard

.
I'm slighly confused...
Are these machines connected to a hub or switch? or did
you try to connect the machines to each other using the
bundled network cables? If you're doing the latter you
*NEED* to use a cross-over cable. This is the only option
when you're connecting two systems [directly] to each
other.

If I'm confused please let me know :Þ

I used a direct connection between the two - it states so in the manual...
' in a dual network, (only two pc's), you can connect directly without a hub
using a crossed UTP cable ' so I check the cable and it states Cat 5 UTP...

argh!
