Hi,

I am very new to any concepts of storing data on an IBM tape drive and
would appreciate if someone could help me out suggesting a solution.

I have data stored in a MS ACCESS database which is updated daily on a
Windows XP environment. I have to convert and store this data on an IBM
3490 catridge in EBCDIC format ( fixed block record
format). Please suggest what software/hardware do i need to put on my
PC to get this working.

Thanks a lot for help

Sid

You need to look at the host machine - don't try to make Windows do
something it can't do. I would guess that your host is a mid-range
machine such as an AS400 or an old System 38 machine?

If you have a local TCP/IP connection use FTP and let the host do the
job for you (Details of ASCII/EBCDIC conversion on request).

You might like to ask yourself why you are using an Access database
which requires a multi-gigabyte backup.

As you state your question, You have several issues. First you have
to agree on record layouts for the data you dump from access. It's
unlikely that the people that will use your data can run access,
directly. Maybe thay can handle a database dump. You have to programm
access to produce the record formats you have agreed on and produce a
file (probably in ASCII). Get the details in writing.

It's possible you can use the internet and FTP to transmit the file
instead of writing a tape. If they insist on tape you'll have
to use a conversion service. They'll also do the ascii-ebcdic converison.

Google "data conversion ibm 3490" for services that do this.

OTOH, you can probably buy an old AS/400 with a 3490 on ebay, cheap.
