open, the pc will make a "click" than shut down and restart. is it the
power supply, mainboard?
sometimes it will do it several times in a hour, than may not do it for
weeks

First, make sure your computer isn't set up to automatically reboot in
case of a STOP error. XP defaults to this, as does Win2k I believe.

Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup And Recovery

-WD

Could be power supply, bad memory, bad hard drive, bad drivers, virus, etc.
One thing that has been happening a lot lately is bad capacitors on certain
motherboards. There was a huge bad batch of them a few years ago. Do a web
search for: capacitors leak electrolyte abit
For example

By the way, I'm not just totally grasping at straws. I had the exact same
symptoms you have, tried all the things I mentioned, then replaced the
capacitors on my motherboard and everything was then fixed. My co worker
just yesterday started having the exact same problem, and sure enough - bad
capacitors. I bet lots of you guys with older systems have bad capacitors,
but who ever checks until the machine dies?
