PC still overheating???

I've tried reinstalling the heat sink but to no avail. I
noticed that a small amount of the compound on the
underside of the heatsink has started to melt every so
slightly. I'm not sure as to how the cpu should be in
contact with the heatsink. On my heatsink there is a
small square of the compound missing from the middle,
where the raised section of the Athlon cpu touches the
heatsink. Should the cpu be in direct contact or should
the compound be in-between. Could it be the processor
that is faulty?

That is normal. The surplus compound is driven away by the pressure of
the heatsink on the CPU. The compound is only necessary to fill tiny
cavities between the CPU and the heatsink.

No, usually not. Unless you have a heatsink with a chunk of soft metal
on the underside.

Yes. You can buy compound in most computer stores. Note however that
you only need a very small amount, the heat flow will be blocked by to
much compound.

I don't think so, a faulty processor usually keeps the computer from
doing anything.
