I am looking for some decent speakers for my PC as
the ones I have are rubbish (not enough volume)
Any ideas chaps (or ladies)?

Nothing too pricey though.

Instead of going with powered speakers, you can pick up a used stereo
at a pawnshop or ??? You can get some very good quality sound that way.

You can get a descent stereo amplifier, and a descent set of speakers if
you want to go all out. Or, you can keep it a bit more simple, and get a
descent set of speakers. I like the new Logitech speakers. The Altec are
also very good. I have the Altec here at home. I am very happy with
these.

I have the Creative I-Trigue 3200's. Nice and small on the desktop, with a
banging Sub-Woofer hiding underneath. Lovely clean sound, good volume,
amazing bass and they look amazing!

Ive been using my home system - a Jolida hybrid amp and Paradigm
mini-monitors. Ive used a boombox before - they have to have an aux in
though which many dont have ---- and they work great too. Most home
systems have way more power and the speakers tend to be much more
robust even in mediocre boom boxes though the PC systems are getting
better all the time - so you can play far louder and get more bass.

However if you dont have an old receiver or something sitting around
--- the cheapest deal Ive seen for an OK system was the Logitech 640z.
These were hot a while back but are getting a bit dated so theyve
really fallen in price. A while back though PC speakers have been
claiming to be more serious about sound for years it was only a little
while ago that the subs actually got halfway decent bass and the sats
got OK mids and highs.

Youve to imagine that tiny 6.5 woofers are considered PUNY even for
satellites in real speaker systems and they can easily cost several
hundred even low cost audiophile speakers. You cant expect a laughable
6.5 or even one 8" as a "subwoofer" supposedly getting super lows and
some orange sized plastic modules with one tiny cheap paper cone full
range to get stunning sound for $60-80 !

My Paradigms are considered a great bargain at $300 a pair - simple
two ways - 6.5 inch polypropylene woofers and aluminum dome tweeters
which are eons better in quality than the cheapo drivers in PC systems
and with a real crossover and proper enclosure . Still the PC speakers
have come a long way since the incredibly tinny crappy 30 cent paper
cone 3 inch transistor radio speaker thrown in a $1 plastic case.

The Logitech 640z are 5.1 and though they are getting a bit old ---
like I said they were considered very good but as time goes by - they
are putting more and more power/watts into the systems , starting make
actual two ways for the sats and improving the driver quality and
making bigger subs. Now 8" ones though laughably small for a subwoofer
still --- are getting more common.

The thing about the Logitechs is they were on sale a little while ago
for as low as $40 ! If you look around online you cant often still
find them lower than $60. They are OK and if you do play games --- I
was really startled at the difference 5.1 makes on say DOOM. Since I
tend to lag - I hate to pay exhorbitant prices for bleeding edge
products -- I didnt even bother to turn surround sound on when I
playing DOOM at first. Then I got arouind to turning it on and it was
like a whole new game. The echoes, reverberation etc gives the sound a
real sense of space so the creepy immersive quality is greatly
increased.

A cheap home theater in a box would be a good deal too, Ive seen them
around 99-150. Of course some of them probably are junky .

That would involve the nightmare of trying to burn cd's, hence not an
option.

Buy a cable and connect your pc to your home sound system.

Believe it or not I don't actually have a home sound system!!! (shock
horror!!!).
Just a portable radio/cassette/cd player. It has 2 watt out put which is
enough
for me. I would imagine my PC speakers are 1/2 watt or less by the sound of
em.

Maybe a seperate system is a possibility, as they are fairly cheap at the
low end.

I did just see Genius G-06 120 Watt speaker set in a magazine for
£6.62 +P&P. Also 200 Watt PMPO speaker set for £3.78+p&p.
Something lilke that sounds more than enough!!.

Yes something like that should be fine, just a few watts will do.

PMPO is an 'imaginary' figure generated by the manufacturer to look good..
(it might put that out for 0.0000000001 seconds, but continues (RMS) output
is probably in the range of 2W - 4W)

You want to look at RMS values.. A have a set of Logitech Z-340 speakers
(65W RMS) which are 2.1 (2 sattelites and a sub), which work nicely.. I
wouldn't say it had earth shattering bass.. but the bass is still good, and
they go quite nicely..

I'd go for a cheap logitech setup.. good sound for the price you pay..
(set you back around $60)

Chris

Yes I just realised that myself (see post to (e-mail address removed)!!)

Less than 5Watt should be enough for me, I rarely play music loud,
unlike say my new neighbours, who will be getting 5 watts of the
worst songs I can download :OP

While total wattage may not matter, with these PMPO and
other junk speaker systems there is poor sound quality in
general. There just isn't anyone putting the budget into
amp construction then building a mere 2 watt amp for a PC
speaker set, not to mention the poor quality of the drivers
themselves or the enclosure. Even if the volume level would
be sufficient with 2W, you're better off getting at least 7W
2 channel or 20W+ 2.1 channel set.

Yeah hes looking at the very bottom of the barrel there. Its more like
the speakers we all used to use - the really bad ones. They actually
have some real cheapo sub systems in the US for $25 or so. They
probably arent that great either but they probably are marginally
better than the two dinky speaker set type setup with one 4" driver in
each plastic box.

Make sure you apply 120 or 200 RMS watts to those before buying.
That will probably convert them to small and insignificant shreds.

The company Cambridge Soundworks, which has a web site to order from, has PC
speakers which are very resonably priced anywhere from $39 to $499. And as
several PC magazines have noted they are the BEST, most realistic soundaing
available.

I assume you regularly connect your 120/240V computer power supplies to
a 120/240KV power source before making a purchase?

No, but I would connect them to a 120/240V source if I was
suspicious of the ratings.
