PC Speaker Low Volume After XP install

Ok here is my problem. I have a set of PC speakers that are unamped. They worked just fine before I installed XP. After I installed it I hear sound but the volume is so incredably low its making me sick. I need help.

Now then, what sound device are you using? Sound card or onboard sound?

I assume you've loaded relevant drivers for either device? And gone to the relevant setup/volume controls and tried adjusting?
