On Thanksgiving Day I started having a problem. When the
PC is not being used, it will continue to shut down and
restart itself. It will sit after restarting and before
the screen saver comes on(3 Min) it will shut off and
restart again. I have checked for BIOS updates and there
are non for my PC. I am using a presario 5834 running
microsoft xp pro. What is causing this?

Suggestions:
--The default setting for XP is to restart if there is an error so check
Event Viewer for error messages that have date/time stamps that correspond
to the restarts.
--Try a different screensaver.
--You can use MSCONFIG to disable startup programs. Disable extras. Test
standby. If okay, use MSCONFIG again. Add one program back to startup. Test
standby. Repeat until you find a program that hinders standby or until all
programs are added back.
--Disable standby settings to see if the system stays stable. If the system
still restarts, suspect overheating or other hardware problems. If it's
okay, then most likely one or more hardware drivers are not entirely
compatible with standby.

Thanks for the help...I tried all of what you said and it
is still occuring. Any more ideas...thanks again.

Sounds like the Blaster worm to me. What sort of antivirus protection do
you have on the machine, is it up to date and are you running a firewall of
any sort? Are your Windows updates current? The other possibility is that
the machine is overheating.
