shut down the PC and was gone for a week. On return it booted up and ran for about 4 minutes and shut down. if I let it sit for awhile and unplug it and replug it it will start and run for a while and shut down again. Could it be a bad power supply?

Yes, but it could also be a bad motherboard, or the
cpu heatsink clip coming off a bit so it isnt seated
fully and a number of other less likely possibilitys.

Easiest to try a spare power supply if you have one and
still the most likely possibility to try if you dont have a spare.

Roger Charette rattled this off his keyboard on 10/2/2006 :

Could it be a bad power supply?

Most likely culprit.
