i am running windows xp and i am currently experiencing some new problems.
If i put a disc into my drive the pc shuts downs, this can also happen when
i am in the middle of working on the pc it will just shut down.
Can any one give me any ideas as to why this is happening, and how i can
prevent it from happening.

It sounds like a bad drive, a bad ribbon or a problem with the
motherboard. This happened to me once and it was the ide connector on
the motherboard gone bad. The only thing to do was to replace the board.

Can you test the drive in another machine? Could you hook the drive up
to the other ribbon to test the drive?

You really need to supply more information and you will probably get
more responses if you post to the XP group. This is for Vista.

Might also be your power supply. I would take it to a shop and give them a
detailed description of what is happening. Also specific instances that you
KNOW will shut the computer off.
