My computer just shits off without warning sometimes then won't turn on for
several minutes. The system is not overheating or even under heavy use at
times when it turns off. Which piece of hardware does the problem most
likely originate. PSU, motherboard, CPU, or other? I hope to narrow it down
and replace the culprit if possible. The motherboard is an ABIT IS7, the PSU
is a 450W Coolmax, and the processor is a P4 2.8GHz Northwood. Any
suggestions on how to narrow the problem down would be appreciated.

This really does sound like overheating if it wont turn on for several
minutes afterwards. And really, it could be any of the components that
you listed. First of all, are all of the fans running and working
properly? Second, how new is the unit? Try to run it in safe mode with
networking and see if it does the same. If it doesn't do it in safe
mode, try to update the BIOS while you're in there. You'd be surprised
how many issues flashing the BIOS will fix...lol. If you would like,
you can email me at (e-mail address removed) and I will try to help
you out if I can.
