hi
about an hour ago, my comp started making a weird sound
about every two minutes or so (it actually seems to be pretty
exactly 2 minutes). it sounds like a 'sweeping' sound, played
six times (like "pfff pfff pfff pfff pfff pfff").
i used antivir to scan my disks - no result. then i used HijackThis
to scan for unwanted programs, again with no result.
has anyone heard of this behaviour before, or has any advice?

thanks
martin

Could just be your cd player doing something. They tend to do things like
that when they are on the way out, or you've left a disk in. Where's the
sound coming from exactly?

from the sound card/speakers, or from the base unit? If the speaker,
have you installed any daft applications like 'weatherbug'?

if the base unit, is the disk access light on at the time? Do you have a
CD/DVD in a drive?

if it's the hard drive, you may be about to experience a major problem.

If the OS is Win2000 or WinXP have you looked in the system logs?
(my computer, manage, event viewer)

thanks for your comments. i thought the sound was coming from
the speakers, but, concentrating on that, i didnt recognize it was
coming from somewhere else ;( stupid me....sorry!

Do you have your cell phone near your speakers?

The voice of "Martin Stich" drifted in on the cyber-winds,
from the sea of virtual chaos...

There are a few viruses that generate sound via the PC speaker on
specific dates, but I can't find the one that does that on the 28th...

I could be some prank or joke...
Check what was most recently installed.

An optical disk drive putting on the brakes makes a sound like that.

....or more like shhhhHHHclick shhhhHHHclick

As a technician, I made good use of a stethoscope for some
mechanical problems. A makeshift stethoscope can be made
by sticking the blunt end of a screwdriver against your earflap
an placing the other end against the computer cabinet.

(the accompanying chanting and dancing was just for effect)

;o)
