Right well, i inserted my ram card (foolishly) in the wrong way, and my
computer smelt funny. the computer now only beeps three times, and will
not do anything else. what do you suggest i do from here. is there a
way of fixing my computer or do i need new hardware (if so what).

few notes: i have another ram card and a second RAM slot on my PC. i
have removed the BIOS battery to try and clear the memory but on
reinsertion, no change..

Please help
(if you think that this is the wrong place to post this tell me where
would be better thanx)

Bring your computer to a professional technician for testing. You can then
decide whether it's more cost effective to replace the damaged parts or buy
a new computer.

is there a way of giving me an estimate of the costs..
because in my eyes it could be £1 to £700

At best you fried the RAM. It is more likely you fried the motherboard.
Depending on the age of the computer and if the CPU is still OK you may want
to look at a new computer. Take it to someone with the right equipment and
skills to diagnose it.

Do you expect me - never having seen your computer and with no idea of what
things cost where you live - to have a clue?

Same thing happened to me last week and it turned out that a fried the
motherboard.

I managed to find a exact same model motherboard and everything works fine.

Also since I replace my motherboard my system is running at 18c and CPU is
running at 33c full load.
They were running in the 50's before.

Well, you won't do that again in a hurry, will you?
Seriously, most components are keyed in some way, so as to prevent this
kind of fault from happening.Usually, cards of almost any kind will
have a slot cut out of the contact plate, which is in an off centre
position, so you shouldn't be able to do this kind of thing. When
installing any kind of card, place the card next to the slot and ease
it very gently into the board - if it does't fit, then DON'T force
it.Best of luck with your next PC.

Most likely needed--New Motherboard & new Ram.
Possibly a processor as well, and even interface cards if any were
installed.
How you managed to get a RAM card in "backwards" is a mystery, since the
sockets and cards are keyed.

If you have an AMI BIOS, three short beeps means RAM failure. You may only
need a new mobo and if you're lucky, not even that. All fires aren't fatal.
Go to a shop where you would buy a new one if you had to and have them test
your stuff for you. They likely won't charge you if you are buying needed
replacement items from them.
