hi -

new here, please bear with me... searched this forum - found similar problems, but no solution yet. this is doing my nut!

running small network connecting to adsl, sharing files and printers, through Netgear dg834g wireless router/modem: 1 wired pc WinXP pro;, 1 wireless pc WinME; 1 wireless mac OSX.

i'm trying to add a laptop (wireless, XP Home) to this small network to share files and printers; it's already joining the network in so far as it can access the net, but it can't find any of the other pcs etc., and on the other machines the laptop's not showing up in the workgroup either.

they all have the same Workgroup name, file sharing is enabled on all of 'em, the firewall on all of them is set to allow file sharing. i have tried running Windows's network setup "wizard" (which, i feel, should be called Neville Longbottom), both independently and by using a floppy, and by using a flash drive, several times each... the "wizard" seems to run fine, but it's still not working, laptop's still not showing up in the workgroup. i am now going crazy.

what's going on??! please help!

cheers,
alex

You have to make sure "wireless zero configeration" is enabled.

basically, windows must be in control of the wireless network, not some 3rd party software that came with the laptop

yup - i use windows wireless configuration, not netgear's (the card's a netgear wg511t, which i've been using in another machine for about a year with no problem).

further info.:

when i hit View Network Computers in Network Places, i get the following error:

"My Network Places

Homenet is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this network is not currently available."

i'm the only person you might call administrator round here, and we don't have a server.

ok - that fixed it - thanks.

now i guess i need to tweak my firewall settings (Trend internet security 2005) - any ideas?

cheers,
alex
