My internal CD burner and floppy drive as well as an after market external
CD/DVD burner have all stopped functioning at the same time. The floppy
still shows up under my computer but the CD and DVD drives don't even show.
Since they have all stopped at the same time, I was assuming this was more
than just a worn out burner or drive that needed to be replaced. Im
wondering if I have lost a program file somewhere? I would try to repair
windows from my disk, but I dont have a drive to use. Is there a way for me
to check this online or scan my computer for errors without having to use the
disk. Seems like I saw a free program not long ago that would do that? Any
other thoughts as to what might be going on? I am running XP home and keep
it up to date with windows updates.

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive:
or you get an error code 31
See: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314060
(Remove Upper and Lower filters)

CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529

XP does not recognize a DVD-RW disc
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818733/en-us

Also:
Right click on the My Computer Icon on your desktop
and select Manage and select: Device Manager
(Or: Go to Start, then select 'Run' and in the Open field enter: devmgmt.msc
then click on the OK button)

After the Device Manager window opens, click the "+" to expand the
DVD/CD-Rom drives option.
Next, right-click on the CD/DVD Drive(s) you are having problems with
and select: Uninstall.
You may be prompted to reboot your computer, do not reboot!
Instead shutdown the PC and remove the cable to the CD/DVD
drive or drives. Now with the drives disconnected, boot the PC.
Check that the CD/DVD devices are no longer listed in
Device Manager. Now power down the PC, reconnect your
CD/DVD drivers. Windows should discover the devices and
reinstall the drivers.

No need to remove the cable from the floppy drive, that's not the issue.

For the CD and or DVD drive you need to open
the Desktop case cover with the power off.
You should see a ribbon connector connected to the back
of the CD and or DVD drives, remove this cable but remember
which connector on the ribbon cable is connected to the DVD
and which is connected to the CD. This cable usually is gray
in color and has on edge marked with a red wire and
the two black connectors (one to the CD and on for the DVD)
also has a small bump/raised guide, make note of this and the red wire.

If you still are unsure let me know.

I agree. Since they all quit at once, it's not likely to be a hardware
problem.

I'd try a system restore back to a date prior to when the problem began

Kinda sounds like your drivers got corrupted, possibly even your chipset.
What were you running when it died?
Try restoring your computer to an earlier time when all was good. If that
won't cure it, you may end up having to replace your MB.
