Hi, a friend on a tight budget wants to buy a second hand pc. He would
only use it for email and web surfing. What would be the minimum
requirements in terms of speed and memory etc to run windows xp please?

Here are some good real-world minimum requirements for Windows XP.

1 GHz Processor
512 MB of RAM

It will run with much less of a machine, but you won't be happy with it.

The machine I'm running currently is a P3 at 617MHz, 384Mb and XP runs
without any problems. Where you may get issues is with programs you run
under XP. The majority are fine but editing large pics I go to a P4 2.4GHz
with 2Gb RAM, it helps speed things up quite considerably, but the P3 is
fine for less demanding things- I use it for internet, letters, emails and
such. It is more than adequate for that. If you are attaching any hardware
check the minimum requirements- for example a USB (Zoom 3090) modem- one
version of it needs a minimum 500Mhz processor, another version of the same
modem needs a minimum 700Hz.
