PC Maintenance Software Recommendations please

It's rubbish.

Use a defrag program, use Crap Cleaner (freebie software) and scan for viruses and Malware with free software programs such as Antivir and SuperAntiSpyware.

Beware most everything else, it's all a con and much of that software causes more harm than good.

Or you could, of course, backup important stuff then do a fresh install, all versions of Windows - with the possible exception of Vista - benefit greatly from that.

I'm with V_R (edit: and flops!), skip any software like that and just sort out the system manually (although CCleaner is probably the only cleaner tool I use, and that's handy).

What is it you are trying to maintain/clean?

PC keeps crashing whilst playing Total War games on my PC. MS diagnostics suggested altering the graphics hardware acceleration to zero & clear 'enable write conditioning' ????

Also, pcpitstop recommends updating the graphics software BUT not according to Windows Update???

I have a lot of crap in start up but a bit nervous about mucking around with msconfig.

I already have diskeeper & kaspersky installed.

Regarding the Graphics drivers, dont worry about windows update...

http://www.nvidia.co.uk/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-uk

Get the latest drivers from there, then follow the steps below.... :)

(Make sure you have Driver Sweeper installed before you start)

1. Uninstall the drivers as normal.
2. Reboot in to safe mode. (F8)
3. Run Driver Sweeper and remove all traces of Nvidia's leftovers.
4. Reboot as normal and run Ccleaner.
5. Reboot as normal and install the new dirvers.
6. Reboot when asked to and your done.

Some may say this is overkill, and hey it maybe. But i've never had any issues with conflicts etc doing it this way and i've always done it like this.

According to nvidia -

ASUS X1950 Series 0.0 Your PC currently has the latest driver installed for your GPU. No driver update is necessary at this time.

ASUS X1950 Series Secondary 0.0 Your PC currently has the latest driver installed for your GPU. No driver update is necessary at this time.

OMG.... I dont know why but i just assumed you had an NV card, but your signature says its an ATI! lmao. Sorry, in that case NV wont be able to help! :D

will have more luck there. What version of Catalyst do you have atm?

You would still need Driver Cleaner with a ATI Catalyst update.

I thought the ATI Radeon X1950 Pro ULTIMATE & ASUS X1950 Series 0.0 were one and the same?? I think ATI is on my PC.

Catalyst??
