Hi, lately whenever I have MS Word documents or other
programmes open, eg. internet explorer...my laptop
shutsdown without warning. It goes straight to black and
switches off. This seems to be happening about 2 or 3
times a day!! Any ideas? Thannks.

Shaz,

Could you outline any changes / update's e.t.c which you
have carried out on you PC, anything you did before it
suddenly start just powering off?

Hi Mike,
Recently I have been gettting a lot of pop-ups,
advertising ringtones, Samsung fan clubs, etc, so I
searched this site and downloaded Ad-Aware from Lavasoft
which identified several adware/spywares running which I
deleted. I am still getting one pop up that keeps coming
despite installing a new Microsoft tool bar popup
blocker. I have also installed Stinger from Mcafee -
which identified about 3 or 4 viruses - W32/Blaster.worm
and W32/nachi.worm a virus and b virus, which I removed.
Obviously something is causing it, but I'm not sure what
other software I can run to check (without buying it!)
I also recently updated all the critical security updates
for XP and Windows from Microsoft.
Thanks, Sharron.

Shaz,

So am I right im you understanding that you don't have an
Anti-Virus tool installed?

If this is the case, can I recommend you download the
below free-trial and run it on your machine to ensure
that you don't have anymore viruses. Then we can asess
your issues further :d

Link:

http://www.my-etrust.com/downloads.cfm

It's called Ez-AntiVirus 2005.

Install it, run it and see if it helps, if not post
back :D

Sure:
- flat battery, charger's not plugged in
- overheating, e.g. failing the "carpet test"
- flaky hardware
- software errors + default to "restart on errors"
- network worm attacks crashing RPC, etc.

I'd guess the first two-and-a-half, as the others would flash a blue
STOP screen, show a countdown warning etc.

Laptops have fans to cool the processor, and these often have to pull
air in from underneath. Run such laptops on a carpet, bed, blanket
over your knees etc. and you may block this ventillation.

I have also installed Stinger from Mcafee - which

and W32/nachi.worm a virus and b virus, which I removed.

That those worms were present indicates your PC is or was open to
them; they rely on unpatched RPC code in order to enter the system, as
well as the absence of a firewall to block access to the defect.

So you need to:
- get off all networks
- clean these viruses all over again
- turn on the firewall (or install a 3rd-party firewall)
- clean and protect the rest of your LAN as above
- reconnect to Internet
- pull down patches required to fix the defective code
I also recently updated all the critical security updates
for XP and Windows from Microsoft.

Without an effective (preferably formal) virus scan, you may find
attempts to run a firewall, antivirus or apply patches will fail.
That's because several malware defend themselves against such risks.

Don't forget that Stinger only looks for about 50 or so malware, out
of several thousand that are in the wild. They are a good mix to look
for, being common, but still it's like swotting a day's worth of
"spots" to prepare for a final exam that culminates a 3-year course.
