The machine is quite possibly crashing, and shutting off - the default XP
behaviour.

To aid debugging this, right-click on My Computer and choose Properties, and
then go to the Advanced page. On -IIRC- Startup and Shutdown, de-select
'shut down on error'. Sorry, i can't recall the exact wording. Click
OK back to the desktop; you may want to reboot.

This won't fix anything, but it *will* give you some useful information as
to just what is causing this restart.

How often does it shutoff? is it actually shutting off or just rebooting?
is it spontaniously using the shutdown process or are you getting a blank
screen suddenly?

Ther is an option to select restart service rather than restart computer
when conflic appears.

If I was you mate I'd check to see if you have the
MSBlast Virus, or a variant of it, that's what it sounds
like to me.

It sounds like you have the Blaster virus or something
similar to that. Go to
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_qr.htm#rpc

You will find patches there to install.
