PC. Keeps restarting & will only work in safe mode?

Operating system xp service pack 2 on a IQON desk top PC. Which is two years
old. PROBLEM; My sons user account was not displaying correctly, eg. no clock
or icons in the system tray & no start button. All other user accounts were
fine.I did virus scan with nod 32, & two different syeware scans & all
reported clean. I then started a system restore & while it was doing it the
electric went off. I put the electric back on & it would not then boot into
windows it just starts & goes to black screen saying sorry it can't start
windows & tells me to go back to "last known good configeration" or "start
windows normally" niether of these work I can only get into safe mode. I have
looked at info of what to do, Repair xp seems a likely thing to fix it but
how can I do a reair of xp as I don't have a xp disc, my pc came with the
recovery installed on the hard drive so u don't get a disc. I wondered if my
easiest option is to set it back to its factory setting & would that fix it.
Sorry to all those who think I'm thick But yes I am so I need some help
please!

Caution!

A restore to factory settings will wipe out all data on the machine!
 
More information is needed.

Please post a copy of the Stop Error Report.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer.Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Hi, Gerry, I had checked in device manager before posting, sorry I should
have said that. There is No problem there at all. I am going to do what you
have kindly instructed me to do but if I can't follow your instructions &
muck it up would setting back to its factory settings fix it do you know? I
know it will wipe all my data, I have most of it backed up & realise it is a
long job setting it all back up again so I would rather do it as you have
instruced but I would like to know if rolling it back to factory settings
would work if I muck every thing else up.

Spot ON!, yes please send the rest and please don't repeat the error message
just one of each kind enough.

This can indicate a bad Video Card/driver or a hardware installed recently
or going bad, try to disconnect any Hardware connected to this machine, for
Ex Printer, scanner, Camera, External HDD..etc..
Please while you are in Safe Mode try system restore to an earlier date
before this happened and see if you can get into shape back in business and
we can troubleshoot from there.
Does your machine get overheated lately (can you smell a burning smell out
of it)?.

Yes that's the kind of Report that is helpful.

This would be my response except you currently have no internet
connection to be able to carry it. This is not a big problem as the
problem mere makes system shutdown slow.

I have just got my computer up & running after taking your advice. I did as
you said & unabled it from restarting & what happened was it would then not
start at all, it just went from being able to go into safe mode with
networking to the initial problem of restaring over & over. My only option
was to reset it back to factory settings! I have just got all my back ups &
wanted programmes back on it in between doing christmas. Answering previous
question to me, No there is no over heating or smell & all hardwear is
working correctly.
Sorry Gerry I don't understand the last posting that you wrote, please
explain, & I will just add that I did wonder if "disabling restart
automatically in the event of problem " would give that out come but I also
read in a book that it was the first thing to try so I went ahead, so u
weren't alone giving that advice, just a shame what transpired.

Hi Nass, There is no information at all at this time at the link you posted,
Any more info that I could understand would be appreciated as this seems to
be the cause as I couldn't find any other prob's. Be great to know incase it
happened again. Thanx, Happy new yr.
