Hi, I am having a problem with my desktop with win 2000
pro on it. It was always working fine until the other day.
All of a sudden whenever I went to use windows search for
files the windows installer box kept popping up asking me
to install some component with microsoft office 2000. I
kept hitting cancel because I did not see any reason to
insert my office CD.
Well now it seems the problem is worse. Whenever I reboot
my pc it will just about bootup to win 2000 and then the
machine automatically restarts and just keeps recycling in
this manner. It does fine in safe mode except for the
windows installer box still popping up on windows search.
I would insert the office cd now but now it just gets
stuck when it pops up and does'nt even ask me for the cd
now. I think some of windows files are missing from my
hard drive but not sure which ones or how to repair it. I
have tried to do the repair pocess with the win 2000 cd,
scanned the disk, started in safe mode, and the problem
continues. I even re-installed win 2000 again as a second
operating system. The computer starts fine in the second
installation but I cannot open my programs within the
second version, I can see the programs on my C: drive but
cannot open any of them, it keeps saying I am missing
certain DLL's within those programs. So I am asking for
ANY assistance that will get me back to the first normal
working version of windows so that I do not have to re-
install all of my programs again.

Here are the things I would do, one step at a time:

- Scan it for viruses on www.antivirus.com
- Run sfc.exe (System File Checker)
- Boot the machine with my Win2000 CD, then select "Repair",
and get the process to repair the installation.
- Boot the machine with my Win2000 CD and re-install Win2000
on top of the existing installation.
