In all that - you did not mention downloading/installing the latest hardware
drivers from the indivisual hardware manufacturers...

Housekeeping here is a weekly event. Poor housekeeping will contribute
to poor system performance but it is only one of a number of possible
contributory factors.

What is the CPU speed?

How much RAM?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

Do you leave your computer on 24/7?

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report . Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save
As and Save. Now find VolumeD.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a
copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more
informative.

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements?

contributory factors.

What is the CPU speed? how will i know this? is it 3.00 GHZ? Intel Pentium 4

How much RAM? 248MB

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

total 435932
limit 620212
peak 463776
You should be able to gather more information from Task Manager. With
the Processes tab open select View, Select, Columns and check the boxes
before Peak Memory Usage and Virtual Memory size. What are the figures
for the 6 processes using the largest amounts?

(no browser/programs/applications except task manager)

avgrsx-16964K
incdsrv.exe-4096k
explorer.exe-5980k
svchost.exe-7388k
avgwdsvc.exe-2840k
taskmgr.exe-1940k
Do you leave your computer on 24/7? NO. average hours per day use 8-10 hours.

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report . Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save
As and Save. Now find VolumeD.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a

What are your anti-virus and anti-spyware arrangements? only AVG

Furthermore,
I copied this question from the MVP because I have the same problem. These
are my answers

1. What is the hardware configuration of your computer? How fast is
the processor? How much RAM do you have? answers are same as above.

2. How slow is "rather slow"? Put a number on it. 1-10 as 10 slowest. it is
7.

3. Is it slow all the time, or only when doing certain things? Which
things? all the time. it takes time to startup and open browser, programs
and websites.

4. Has it always been slow, or has it gotten slower? How long has it
been since it got slow?i had ntldr missing black screen before so technician
reformatted and re-installed OS and programs. after that, pc became slow.

5. What changes to your hardware or software configuration did you
make around the time it got slower?no hardware changes. Any new software
installed? NONE

encarta prem 2006- 2,921 MB
office pro 2003-637mb
nero essentials-354 mb
adobe reader 9-204mb

6. What anti-virus program do you run? Is it kept up to date? only avg 8.0
33.04MB

7. What anti-spyware programs do you run? Are they kept up to date? NONE

8. What programs do you have starting automatically? Go to Start |
Run, and run the program MSCONFIG. Tell us the names of all the
programs shown on the Startup tab.? ctfmon only

From your answer one answer probably explains your problem. You need to
add RAM. 248 mb is not enough you need to increase it to 512 mb. This is
evident from the Total and Peak exceeding the installed RAM.

What is your computer make and model?

You did not answer this question?

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report . Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save
As and Save. Now find VolumeD.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a
