to 'disk clean up' and yet this heap always says "virtual
memory is low" and the modem grinds like a coffee maker,
pc is slow, often freezes up (" program is not
responding" message is often) can't run more than 1

How much ram do you have ?
What are your virtual memory settings ?
If u have 256 Mb or less of ram i would suggest purchasing some more.
Virtual memory is accessed by right clicking My Computer, clicking
properties then advanced then click the performance settings tab.
In there click on the advanced tab take note of your Total paging file size
for all drives and post it back along with your system specs : )

Hello. Phoned Dell service line.lol. Talked to 3 fine
folks in India. One was helpful. Seemed to clean up the
problem by going into 'regedit'in 'run' and following
bunch of trails to "wait to kil service" & changing value
from 20,000 (!!!oops) to 200. Kept copy of dictation so I
can keep this messageboard open for all my OTHER
questions. I do have 256MB of ram left. Tech support said
that was fine, not low. What should it be at under
desirable conditions. Also, 'virtual memory total paging
file for all drivers" said 384MB. Is this low? how do I
increase? Thanks for your time, very much appreciated.
Merry Merry:)Kim

Kim;
384mb is fine for you.
You should be letting Windows manage it.
Right click My Computer
Click Properties
Click Advanced tab
Click Performance "Settings" button
Click Advanced tab
Under Virtual Memory click Change
System Managed Size
