pc idiot needs help?

Please don't throw your knowledge at me. I know very little about PC's other
than how to use programmes on them.

Basically, I am after an answer as to whether something can be done or not.

I have 2 programmes that make my PC shut down, all at once, no warning ....
just off (like a power cut). It is then very hard to re start my pc. I need
to unplug the electric and then plug it back in ... and it starts without
pressing anything (again, like a power cut, but when the power comes back
on).

The programmes are mp3gain and arcsoft showbiz dvd2.

If I press alt del ctrl and get my task manager up. I can see that either
programme is using all of my cpu.
Also,when my computer does "cut off" it is very hot.

Is the problem cpu related or heat related or both?

And can I resolve any?

A properly designed and maintained computer, never overheats. The cooling
system inside, is designed for 100% CPU, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If there is a problem with the cooling, the computer can overheat and
shutdown. And heavy usage computer programs are likely to highlight
a problem.

The BIOS "Restore on AC power loss" setting, may affect the behavior
when power is restored. That is the setting I'd check.

Take the computer to a reputable computer store or repair facility,
and get the cooling fixed. Chances are, the CPU cooler clip is broken,
and the CPU cooler fell off.

Also, another recommendation for you. Do you do backups ? Purchase
a hard drive, in an external enclosure. Copy your files on the C:
drive, to the externally enclosed hard drive. Why do I recommend this ?
Because some computer repair facilities, reformat the C: drive, and
erase all the customer's files (even when you tell them specifically
*not* to do that). So before you take the computer anywhere, for repair
work, make a backup! This is an example of a backup device, with decent
features.

Sounds like a bad power supply to me. But then you'd have to explain why
you think your computer is "very hot". Very hot to a human touch could be
actually COOL to a CPU or video card. But have someone check your BIOS
settings to see if thermal shutdown is enabled. If so, see if you can
increase the temperature of shut down SLIGHTLY to see if that helps. If so,
then that would indicate a heat problem. -Dave

There are some intensive and badly written programs that can shut down
the PC. What you should do is check your bios (usually the delete key
before the drives are displayed on reboot) to see if you have shutoff
temperatures for your PC. Sometimes it's the graphics card temp.

I have one program that heats up my PC to my bios shutdown temps. The
lower the room temperature the cooler the cpu temps.

Theres a couple of free programs you can download and install to help you
out.

Everest Ultimate can launch a systray temp monitor or record temps to a
file to be reviewed later.


What's running is different, it just shows what programs are running on
your PC. If you can't determine if the program shouldn't be running you
can turn it off but if you're not positive it's better to leave the
program running.
