We are talking about 'land line' phones here, not mobiles. Quite a few
people rely upon a dial up modem in order to send/receive faxes. If your PC
is 'off' when a fax arrived then you couldn't receive the fax. The BIOS,
therefore, contained a 'wake on ring' option which. effectively, bought the
pc to life when the phone rang, even if you hadn't got a fax. In order to
prevent this it was necessary to disable the 'wake on ring' option in the
BIOS, so you might like to check the BIOS for this option too, especially if
you have noticed that the pc does come alive when the phone rings.
My current machine is only a few months old and I haven't locate a 'wake on
ring' option, although the wake on lan is still there. However, my last
machine was three years old and that did have the option to 'wake on ring'
in the BIOS.
