Using WIN XP (SP2) on a Microstar PC I am trying to uninstall and reinstall
my PC mounted USB ports due to an issue I am having loading/reloading
hardware (USB) devices. In "SAFE MODE" I navigate to the Device Manager and
select the bottom USB device and right-click then select Uninstall. I am
prompted to confirm Uninstall and click "Yes" but my computer just stops
responding altogether. Can anyone advise me why this is happening and if
there is something else I need to do?
I have 4 mounted USB ports on my machine (2 at the front and 2 directly on
the Motherboard at the rear)but am currently only using 1 of them with my
Wireless mouse. I have been through many forums trying to find out if this
activity is causing my computer to Hang or is there possibly something else
which the machine is reacting?
The reasons for the uninstall/reinstall is that when my Hardware wizard
tries to install a hardware device it finnishes by telling me that the "Data
is Invalid"

Uninstall the "USB Root HUB" device(s). This will take out the ports with it,
and all will be found again on restart.
Another common issue with USB's is the Power Management" setting in the
Properties of the devices, set to turn off the port.

Thanks for the reply but I still cannot delete/remove/uninstall the 3 Root
Hub USB's listed. I have even tried disabling them first then highlighted the
bottom one first, press delete then confirm Uninstallation "Yes" and my PC
stops responding. Can you tell me how long should the process take to remove
the device? What might be causing this phenomenon to happen?
I have switched the power options as you suggested in your reply.

Either you have a damaged operationg system that needs a repair setup, or the
USB hardware is broken. I would first remove any USB I could and try it
again, then run a repair setup, if that failed.

Problem now resolved. I found some information regarding the permissions
settings on the Registry Keys for the USB's - folder identified as "USB". I
realised that the permission ownership wasn't set right and changed it to the
only alternative setting which was my identification. I checked the check box
to apply to all child keys and reinstalled my USB drivers. I then ran the
installation CD's for my hardware (one at a time) and they are now working
perfectly. I wish to thank you anyway for your responses and maybe this info
can help you identify other problems in the future.
